Not redecorating might be the greenest choice
Susan Straight talks about "pride of ownership" in a recent LA Times Opinion piece, "It's so lazy being green." Straight talks about various pieces in her home, like an old couch, a redwood picnic table from her mother, an old mixing bowl and a turtle sandbox that serves as a cooler for drinks, now that her kids are grown up.The reason for this thriftiness? Perhaps an effort to go green, and not waste resources? Nah. Straight decides she is just "way to lazy to renovate...That's why we're green. We have absolutely no pride. We just don't care enough."
It's a cute summer read, and brings home a very important point. In our world today, with marketers trying to sell us eco-everything, including in the area of home decoration, the greenest choice is not to redecorate, and to make do.
If you do need furniture, be sure to check out secondhand sources first, like Craigslist. Check out these tips from Ellen on buying secondhand.
