Chrysler drags feet on hybrids, electric car in 3-5 years
In these days of skyrocketing gas prices, the last thing a Chrysler dealer wants to hear is that the company is not going to greatly expand its hybrid lineup until late 2012 -- but that's what they've been told to expect. Ouch. At a time when truck and SUV sales are tanking, it's sadly ironic that those are exactly the type of hybrid rides that Chrysler is set to unveil. In September, Chrysler's first two hybrid options will hit the market -- both of them are hulking SUVs. The following year will see a hybrid version of the Dodge Ram pickup. Not to kick Chrysler while they're down, but come on guys. GM's full-sized hybrids might have won an award or two, but they're not exactly flying off the lots. With the current energy crisis, it doesn't seem revolutionary to offer a few truly eco-conscious rides. According to the Free Press, Chrysler's first hybrid car -- the hybrid Avenger -- is tentatively slated for the 2013 model year. Their first electric vehicle could take up to 5 years.
