Bush jokes about pollution -- rest of the world unimpressed
It's difficult to believe but George Bush has managed to make the news with yet another ill-conceived comment. You'd think that by now people would tune him out. While meeting with the G-8 in Hokkaido, Japan, Bush announced upon leaving, "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter." He then punched his fist into the air and "grinned widely." All this time, I thought he was clueless.Snarky comments aside, the G8 recently met to discuss climate change along with ten other countries. New goals were set to reduce carbon emissions worldwide. The goal is to cut carbon emissions in half by 2050. China and India are refusing to sign anything until the U.S. takes more aggressive steps towards cutting emissions. These two countries are the actual leaders in greenhouse emissions despite Bush's announcement.
Because of this standoff, not much progress was made during this week's meeting. However, the United Nations will be meeting in Copenhagen in 2009 to form a binding treaty and we will have a new president by then who may be more receptive to environmental policy change. Patrick goes into further detail of this week's events here.
