Ease off on that tilapia?
Stories about fish are just everywhere. To me, it's almost become so complicated that I can hardly even wade through it anymore. We have tuna calculators, cards to carry in your wallet, tuna sushi not looking so hot, and wild fish that really isn't. But here's another one for you.Turns out you might want to go easy on that tilapia, specifically farm-raised. Farm-raised tilapia has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 acids and even worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, according to researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This doesn't mean that the fish may not be as healthy for you as you thought, but that it could actually be detrimental to your health.
Farm-raised tilapia is one of the most highly-consumed fish in America and has shown the biggest gains in popularity, according to the researchers. It is easily farmed using inexpensive corn feeds. The study found that farm-raised tilapia, as well as farmed catfish, have fatty acid characteristics that generally would be considered detrimental, with "higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain omega-6 fatty acids than 80-percent lean hamburger, doughnuts and even pork bacon."
So while some cardiologists may be telling their patients to go home and eat fish, if it's farm-raised tilapia, it may be doing more harm than good.
