The race for the world's first "green" island
First we had the Space Race, and now it seems we have the Green Island Race. Being the first to create an entirely self-sustainable "green" island is in fact an ambitious goal, and many high-profile celebrities are racing to become the first. There's Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's Dubai island, there's one in the works by Virgin Chairman Sir Richard Branson, there's one being created by Leonardo DiCaprio, who ironically starred in a movie about a very similar issue. However, the most surprisingly low-profile participant is also said to be winning this race. David Sklar, the architect, CEO and visionary behind Star Island is pulling ahead to create a 5-star resort that is built, operated and maintained by completely sustainable and eco-friendly practices.Star Island is a 35-acre island just off the coast of Eleuthera, in the Bahamas. It will be 100% energy self-sufficient, use a revolutionary rain-water harvesting system, recycle and compost all of it's waste and utilize many other strict guidelines for its day-to-day operations. Not only will it use existing technologies, but hopes to be a testing ground for emerging green technologies in the future.
