Should bottled water be banned?
The debate over bottled water is raging, according to a recent AP article. The US Conference of Mayors recently passed a resolution calling for a phasing out of bottled water by municipalities. The debate over bottled water focuses on the amount of energy and water, ironically enough, needed to bottle and transport all of that water, not to mention use and disposal of all of those plastic bottles. This debate is not limited to the U.S.; all around the world, including in France, England, Canada, Denmark and Australia, policymakers are having these discussions.According to the AP article, all of this chatter is taking place while here in the U.S., sales of bottled water are surging. Some bottled water is tap water, not necessarily a bad thing, but why pay extra for that? Additionally, a NRDC report found that most of the tested bottled waters were found to be of high quality. A representative of the bottled water industry says that the industry is being used as a scapegoat and that bottled water is necessary in times of natural disasters.
As resource-hogging as bottled water is, would you ever favor a complete ban on it? Is bottled water being used as a scapegoat? And isn't a bottle of soda worse, at least for your health?
