Meth and your body won't get along

Obviously drugs -- even the legal ones -- aren't very good for you, and most will get you arrested (or worse), but rumor has it that some people still take them anyway. So, with that in mind, the least you can do is work towards a more sustainable habit. To see all the substances we've covered in this series, see our Guide to Green Green Drug Use.

Having never snorted, injected, smoked, swallowed or bumped meth (also known as crystal, crank, chalk dust, amp, tweak or smurf dope) I can't speak personally for what awfulness can be had. But I've talked with a fair number of Missouri tweakers, and these are a few of the things meth prompted them to do:

  • Clean all of the grout in the bathroom with a q-tip repeatedly for hours
  • Continue to have sex past the point of grueling pain but never reach climax
  • Stay up for days without eating or drinking
  • Itch incessantly, as though bugs were crawling all over
  • Act violenty without judgement
Some of the physical repercussions of doing meth are obvious: STDs and STIs, kidney infections and stomach ulcers, perhaps a few burns and carpal tunnel syndrome. But meth is toxic. This is nothing in comparison to what havoc it wreaks upon the brain, liver, nerves, teeth, skin and immune system.

Oh yes, it's a lot of fun, my pet. And yes, I'm being sarcastic.

First, meth is a stimulant. It opens the dopamine pathways in the brain, like cocaine. But meth creates an edgier, longer high. Frequently, meth users grind their teeth. The drug itself does peripheral nerve damage. It constricts blood flow to all parts of the body, making the body less able to fight infections or heal. Sores and acne develop, often on the face, and the user can't stop touching them.

You've heard of "meth mouth?" The yellow, broken teeth of a meth user only come with a regular habit--and meth is highly addictive. The source of "meth mouth" is a little unclear. It seems part of the decay comes from the dry mouth that develops when you get tweaked. That leaves the mouth unprotected against acidity, but there are other weird factors at play, too. Because blood vessels are constricted, less blood gets to the gums, so the gums start to recede. In addition, some say the chemicals in meth like red phosphorous and anhydrous ammonia, rot your teeth.

And just in case that wasn't enough, the brain gets screwed and there's not fixing it. Those dopamine pathways that were blown wide open are now fried. The receptors essentially become burnt out, making it impossible to feel pleasure. Sorry. That's a life long unhappy meth user. An angry meth addict. Addicts also become paranoid and hallucinogenic. Get off the meth and life doesn't get much better. Memory loss is common as is Parkinson's Disease. Many users and former users lose their cognitive abilities. They can't think so well, nor are the very good at balancing on two feet.

Oh yes, it's a lot of fun, my pet. And good for you, too. And yes, I'm being flip.
