Wait, what? The North Pole will melt this summer?
Yep, you heard me correctly. We've been told the melting of the polar ice caps is imminent for years now, but could it possibly happen this summer? According to researchers at the National Snow and Ice Data center and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, there's a 50-50 chance that the North Pole will be ice-free this summer. Now, before we get too panicked, this doesn't mean 100% completely ice free; not yet, at least. According to a report by MSNBC, last year's astounding ice melt led to new ice being formed this season, which is not as thick as older, more established ice. When this summer warmth hits the North Pole, that new ice will melt much more quickly, causing large patches of open water. It is estimated that by the end of the summer, it would be possible to sail through the North Pole for the first time in recorded history.
