I grew up in a state with a five cent bottle deposit so it was
unheard of to throw a soda can or bottle into the trash. In fact, my brother and I made a great deal of money redeeming bottles at the corner store in our youth. Then I moved south and it is not at all uncommon to go a party and see no recycling for glass and aluminum (pause for gasps). I thought that I would do a
primer and reminder of just how valuable aluminum is and how easily it can be recycled in any state.
- Aluminum is 100% recyclable.
- Aluminum can be recycled an infinite number of times.
- Making a new can from a recycled one requires five percent of the energy it would take to use raw materials.
- The number of aluminum cans recycled annually in the U.S. saves enough energy to light the nation's capitol for 3.7 years.
- You can make money and not just in bottle redemption states. Sell aluminum cans back to scrapyards.
Even if you can't commit to separating your plastics or paper waste, please don't send those cans to the landfill. You can find local recycling centers for aluminum
here.
