This or That: Get your car washed professionally or DIY in the driveway?

My guess would have been that commercial car washes use more water than the average DIY driveway version (what with their gazillions of spray nozzles and outrageous water pressure) but in truth the professionals use significantly less water per vehicle than the typical homeowner does.
The average commercial car wash uses about 45 gallons of water per car, while the average Joe uses anywhere from 80-145 gallons when he does it himself. Plus the pros are required to drain everything into the sewer system for treatment, whereas homeowners often wash their left-over soap and chemicals straight onto sidewalks, streets, and yards.
So if you must wash your car the greenest choices would be to let the pros do it. That, or go the "waterless" route with Eco Touch waterless car wash.
