Save energy, do laundry the eco way

You're always hearing about how you should wash your clothes in cold water and not use the dryer. And it's worth it: 85-90 percent of the energy used to wash a load of laundry comes from heating the water. If you wash your clothes in cold water, you'll save 1,600 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere per year, resulting in up to about $150 in hot water bill costs. Here are some additional tips on washing your laundry:
- Again: unless clothes and sheets are visibly dirty or have major stains, wash in cold water
- Always wash full loads of laundry
- Separate heavy towels and sheets from lighter weight fabrics
- Use natural soaps in cardboard packages, instead of heavily-scented or colored detergents (some examples of natural detergents are Ecover, Seventh Generation, bioKleen and Method)
