Lobster fisherman catches whale, throws back in
How often has this happened to you? Newfoundland fisherman Wally Cunard went to work this week and was surprised to find a 5 metre (16 foot) minke whale caught in one of his lobster traps.
Faced with a choice between calling in the Icelandic harpoon fleet or freeing the trapped mammal, Cunard did the right thing and contacted Wayne Ledwell of the Whale Release and Stranding Group, who drove 800 kilometres to help out. All ended well and Wally, Wayne and the whale exchanged mutual congratulations and went about their business on, beside, and under the water respectively.
I'm assuming the whale was tangled in the lines, not stuck in the actual trap, because a lobster that needs a 15 foot cage is not the kind of crustacean you want to try and toss into a pot of boiling water.
