The Diva Cup: I'm officially a convert
So, I know it's a little weird to write about one's personal habits in a public blog. So if you're squeamish, or don't enjoy publicly reading about and discussing women's health, I suggest you keep scrolling. For the rest of you, believe me when I say: my life has changed dramatically. For the better. And it's all thanks to one small, pliable silicone cup. (I know I sound like an infomercial, but just hear me out).
Two friends of mine have been insisting that I get one of these babies for awhile now. "You write for an environmental blog and you're still using dioxin-laced tampons?! What's wrong with you?!" They both swore by their Keeper (similar to the Diva Cup, but slightly less pliable and made from latex instead of silicone).
I finally gave in and biked over to the local food co-op, where I purchased the last one they had. Now, once a month, instead of buying hoards of tampons and then tossing them onto the landfill (where they'll sit...and sit...and sit), I'm now using one little device that achieves the same end goal. Plus, it saves me money and time and - well, a lot of stress in the long run.
Seriously, my fellow eco divas: try it. I was wary at first, but trust me. It's worth it.

Hi Ellen,
I love the things you are writing about natural body care and products. I represent a few really great eco-friendly cosmetic brands and cleaning lines that I think would be a great fit for your blog. I’d love to send you more information, if you’re interested please contact lmarfoe@lippetaylor.com
Look forward to working with you!
Best,
Kacy

It was slightly uncomfortable reading, but I'm glad I waded through it. It's a fantastic idea, and I'm surprised they aren't more widespread. Just ordered my own! :)

And for women outside North America, ordering from the following companies might be easier:
Lunette (Finland): http://www.lunette.fi
Mooncup (U.K.): http://www.mooncup.co.uk
Like, the Diva, all of the above cups are made of medical-grade silicone, so there’s no reason to go with a latex-based cup like the Keeper. Latex-based cups lose their shape when boiled which is a popular way of sterilizing these cups between periods. Also, latex allergies are common and people have been known to develop latex allergies.

Also wanted to add these new menstrual cup companies that have opened up in the past year:
Femmecup (U.K.): http://www.femmecup.com
LadyCup (Czech Republic): http://www.ladycup.eu
Miacup (South Africa): http://www.miacup.co.za
Again, these are cups made of medical-grade silicone.

I've used a menstrual cup for a decade now, and I wouldn't swap it out. It is a good thing, and it has not only had the environmental benefit, but it has also saved me probably better than 600.00 in purchases of disposable menstrual products.
