Tips to eat tomatoes safely
I'm sure you've all heard about the tomato recalls going on right now. As of yesterday, a salmonella outbreak has sickened 228 people in 23 states and seems to be stemming from many places. In other words, there is no one chain of restaurants or supermarkets that connects the victims.What to do? The FDA is advising consumers to limit tomato consumption to cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes on the vine, tomatoes grown at home, red Plum, red Roma and other tomatoes noted here. Be very cautious of tomatoes that are in fresh salsa, pico de gallo and guacamole also.
Some tomato safety tips:
- Customers everywhere are advised to refrigerate within two hours or discard cut, peeled or cooked tomatoes.
- Avoid purchasing bruised or damaged tomatoes.
- Thoroughly wash all tomatoes under running water.
- Keep tomatoes that will be consumed raw separate from raw meat, raw seafood and other raw produce.
- Wash all cutting boards, dishes, utensils and countertops with hot water and soap when switching between food products.
