Honda wins race to first commercial hydrogen car, sort of
We told you it was coming. Honda has announced a very limited commercial run of the FCX Clarity, the first hydrogen-powered fuel cell car to hit the mini-mass market.
Beginning next month and continuing over the next three years, Honda will deliver 200 of the autos to a select group of customers. Leases will be limited to individuals living in areas around Santa Monica, Torrance, and Irvine, California, which actually have hydrogen fueling stations to support the car. The process of becoming a Clarity leasee is only slightly less complex than adopting a child - prospective drivers have to prove residency, complete a survey, and if they pass those tests, have an actual interview with American Honda.
The latest version of the Clarity seats four, and has a range of about 270 miles, meaning no road trips to Vegas unless you can find a zeppelin refueling station along the way. However, with an engine three times more fuel-efficient than the average gas-powered car and no emissions except water, this may well be the car of the future.
