Organic food sales soar despite economic dips
Despite our crappy economy, we're still buying tons of organic food, according to The Natural Marketing Institute (doesn't that sound like a made-up company?) and The Nielsen Company. Several small organic companies have seen significant growth in the past year, and many, like Vita Soy and Annie's, are offering promotions to keep up with bigger, non-organic companies like Kraft.
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons that organic food sales are climbing is that many non-organic food produce and packaged goods are nearing the prices of previously astronomical prices of some organic food. People who once scoffed at organic apples at $3.49 a pound and $4 cans of organic soup are probaby seeing non-organic prices creep up and thinking, "what's another dollar or two?"
What's your take? Have you started buying more organic food because the price gap between organic and non-organic foods is slowly narrowing? Or has the economy not changed your purchasing habits?

I'm tired of reading about all the junk I'm eating when I buy processed foods -- so we're buying more organics.

I've been buying organic food for a few years now. I always expected the price gap to narrow.
As the real benefits of organically produced foods became accepted as fact, mainly due to extensive research and individual experience, the more popular it would become.
Popularity brings competition which brings a lowering of prices. The prices have gone down to an extent.
At the same time the price of non-organic food has gone up. The fact that I support organic produce does not mean that I am happy about the rise in non-organic prices. Politics at the very top has caused this.
What I am happy about is the fact that more people are switching, for whatever reason, to food that is healthier for them and our environment.
