Don't smell that new shower curtain

You know that new shower curtain smell that comes off, usually PVC kind. Well, it turns out, not only is it gross, but the smell is due to toxic chemicals that have been linked to liver damage, as well as damage to the central nervous, respiratory and reproductive systems. This comes from a new study out of the Center for Health, Environment & Justice.

Researchers tested the chemical composition of five PVC shower curtains from five retailers. One curtain was then tested to see what chemicals it released into the air. The researchers found high concentrations of phthalates and varying concentrations of organotins, in addition to other chemicals that have been identified as hazardous air pollutants.

So why are these allowed for sale? Very simple, the EPA does not regulate indoor air pollutants.

From Ellen, here's a sample of non-PVC shower curtains.
