Is buying local food only for the privileged?
When you're out buying local produce at a farm stand or the farmer's market, do you consider it something only for the privileged? Sometimes I myself get a bit irritated when I see the parking lot at the local farmer's market full of SUVs and expensive import cars, but that's not something you would usually associate with "farmers". The recent trend of eating locally and organically is certainly a wonderful thing, but I wonder if the point is being lost on some people. In a recent blog post over at Life Force Vibrations, Laurie Kruczek makes the argument that buying locally is certainly not an act of privilege, or for the elitist crowd. I tend to agree with her, and I see it as something that consumers may not do for the immediate benefits of saving money, but more for the long-term benefits of saving their health, their planet and (eventually down the line) their money. This doesn't make you elitist, it makes you caring and concerned with the future of our planet and species.
