Small town festival promotes big-time changes
I recently moved to a cool, hip little neighborhood just outside of Boston proper, and just as fast as you can say Hahvad Yahd, I found myself at the area Bikes Not Bombs Green Roots Festival. Every diverse, environmentally-conscious town has a festival like this, especially when the weather gets warmer and the hydrangeas are in full bloom.
The festival featured a ton of workshops and speakers, including Bill McKibben, a best-selling environmental author.
Some of the highlights: workshops on green building and urban composting toilets; a 30-person steel drum band; countless dreadlocked cyclists walking around barefoot in organic cotton; and a DIY slide for kids: potato sacks on slippery 60-feet of slippery cardboard boxes.
Ironically, the festival took place during an intense, very un-New England heat wave. Hmm...I wonder whatever could have caused such an uncharacteristic, drastic spike in temperature?
