The end of abundance

In the 1960's, a food crisis pushed for the agricultural legislation we have in place today. This yielded more food at lower prices, resulting in a snowballed effect for cheaper food in more abundance. You would think this would be a good thing, right? Wrong.

This trend has finally caught up with us, as through the years, we've become complacent with researching only more ways to cut food costs and production, while leaving food efficiency on the back burner. Plus, with current oil prices driving the cost of fertilizers and pesticides to triple what they were only a few years ago, we're to the point where we need another major "green revolution" as we had in the 60's. I realize this may be a pipe-dream, but if most of the problem is fertilizer and pesticide costs in high-yield environments, does this mean there's an opportunity for the rise of the small organic farm? Surely these can't feed the world, but it makes you wonder what this next important agricultural green revolution will bring.
