Tip of the Day: How to unload your SUV

So you've decided to take the jump to a more fuel-efficient car, perhaps because your commute is kind of on the long side and you're not too thrilled about those $100 fillups.
But how do you unload your SUV in this market? Terry Jackson of Bankrate.com has some tips, but here's the bad news. It's not going to be easy. Trade-in values for used gas guzzlers are dropping, while prices for used compacts are rising. Some new car dealers are actually refusing to take full-sized SUVs and pickups as trade-ins.
Look to a private party sale first. See Edmunds.com or the Blue Book and then plan on pricing below that number. If you do try to negotiate a trade-in with a dealer, do your research first and have the best information before you venture onto the dealer's lot.
Now for the next step..buying. For more tips from Jackson on how to buy a more fuel-efficient car, see Jackson's article here.
