Scrapyards to cash in as metals run out
Some followup info to my Monday post about the age of scarcity - a speaker told a recycling conference this week said that a growing world population and diminishing supply of ore in the ground will mean boom times for the recycling industry and trouble for the rest of us.
According to Henrik Harjula of the Environment Directorate of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, based on projected usage and known deposits, the world's copper resources should last for another 60 years, silver 29 years, zinc 46 years, and tin 40 years.
Of course, that's good news if you happen to own a scrapyard full of junk metal or an old aircraft carrier but not so great if you plan to live for a couple more decades and like to use stuff made of metal.
