One of the big buzz phrases at WINDPOWER 2008 is "20 percent by 2030," or "20%" for short. The DOE surprised a lot of us when it
announced the 20% news a few weeks ago, and since then tons of manufacturers, researchers, politicians, and NGOs have gotten in the habit of throwing out all sorts off
figures as to what that will require. Here's a little recap of what 20% by 2030 will look like:
- 75,000 new turbines
- 500,000 new wind industry jobs in the US
- 19,000 miles of new transmission lines
- Over $60B worth of new transmission capacity
- Annual payments of $600M to rural landowners by 2030
- 263GW of new wind energy by 2030
- Installing 16GW per year by 2018, 5GW were installed in 2007
- A reduction of 825 million lbs of CO2 per year
