Breaking WIND: Skystream 3.7

When you stand around the 'small wind' pavilion at a wind power conference, you end up talking with dudes in cowboy boots, who have a house on the highest hill in the county -- you know, smack in between two podunk towns you've never heard of before. This type of guys is probably interested in something like the Skystream 3.7.

The 3.7 is Skystream's flagship turbine, and it's best offering for that energy-conscious someone who wants to go off the grid. This 170lb beast is not a weekend project for the faint of heart, but it can generate about 400 kWh/month. Coupled with a rooftop solar array, it might just allow you live off the grid -- as long as you don't run a lot of appliances with a heavy draw. As with all wind generators, placement is crucial. The Skystream 3.7 won't start producing energy unless wind speeds are at least 8mph, so researching you turbine's location is the only way to know whether it's worth the initial $5,000 buy-in.
