Breaking WIND: micro-turbines aren't that micro

Here at the Houston WINDPOWER conference, one of my objectives was to find out more about these micro-turbines I keep hearing about. I'm sure a lot of you are interested in sticking a turbine up on your roof to save some money on your A/C bill. As simple as that may seem, these small-scale turbines don't really fit my definition of "micro" at all.

The smaller of these two turbines, the Kestrel 6-blade e150, has a diameter of only 5' feet. Of course, the brochure lists one of its applications as "serving as an educational tool." Needless to say, it's not going to get you off the grid. The larger Kestrel e400 is a more of a full-scale wind installation for your home, but the thing is 13' in diameter and sits on a 50' pole. Unless you're pretty handy, it's definitely not a DIY project.
