Breaking WIND: appreciating the scale of wind turbines

No, it's not a the prototype for the next gen NASA space shuttle. Spanish wind power giant Acciona brought a nacelle from their new 3MW turbine to Houston -- the nacelle is the piece of housing that contains the gearbox and generating components, btw. The huge holes are where the blades connect to the gearbox.

This is first time I've seen one up close, and probably the first time I've been able to appreciate the sheer size of these monstrosities. The closest I'd ever come was watching Mike Rowe clean a nacelle on Dirty Jobs -- which is definitely worth watching if you're interesting in seeing the inside of a turbine.
