Man-made noise tainting the biophony
Clive Thompson interviews Bernie Krause for Wired on the world's rapidly changing biophony. Biophony is what the world sounds like in the absence of humans. According to Krause, in 40 percent of the locations that he has recorded, human-generated noise is present in the wilderness and it's getting harder and harder to find places in the world where there isn't any human-generated noise.According to Krause, it's not just an aesthetic issue but the "contamination of biophony" may become a serious environmental problem, causing problems with animal communication and reproduction, altering ecosystems.
Check out WildSanctuary.com, an add-on for Google Earth where you can hear the natural biophony from many places around the world.
What do you hear where you live, when you step outside your door?

The WildSanctuary site is so cool. I'm using it on my headphones while I work and I feel like I'm in the middle of a rain forest. I guess we forget how real nature can sound even if its only online.
