June's Green Challenge: Compost is the most!
Join the Green Challenge every month and make one small change to help the environment. Then at the end of the month let us know how you did! This month I plan to tackle my kitchen waste. Once I started kicking my recycling into high gear, I got a chance to examine what I was actually throwing away. A lot of my waste was rotting produce from the crisper and other food refuse. I then made the decision to put that stuff to use as compost rather than send it to the landfill. So, my challenge for myself this month (and for you) is to start a compost pile!
Fortunately, Patricia has already done some of the research for me. Now I just have to make some decisions like whether to buy a compost bin or make one as well as where to put said composter. I also have to get around my fear of rats and cockroaches. I know that I "shouldn't" have any furry creatures as long as I pay attention to what goes into the bin but I'm still a little wigged out.
Compost fun facts:
- The average family throws away over 200 lbs. of kitchen waste every year.
- Just because something is "biodegradable" does not mean that it will break down in a landfill ... but it will in your compost pile!
- Compost can be used to nourish the soil for growing just about anything and compost tea is a great way to feed your houseplants.
- Composting can take as little as two weeks depending on the method.
- You do not need a back yard to compost your food waste.
- Compost is not stinky (who knew?).
