Is the city mouse greener than the country mouse?

Quite possibly, yes. A Manhattan resident's footprint is about 30% smaller than the average American. This is because most of them have done away with their cars, take public transportation, and work in the same city in which they live. In addition, New Yorkers tend to live on top of one another which keeps heating and cooling costs down and limits the amount of grass to be mowed.

There are many other ways that city dwellers keep their carbon footprint down. You won't find McMansions in the city, for one. Residences tend to have less square footage. It's not uncommon to cram a family of four into 900 square feet. Less space means less energy to heat. Fresh food and local produce are also more readily available and closer to the residence (that is unless you grow your own -- something that's difficult in city life).

So, the next time you are weighing the options of moving out of the city, keep these few things in mind.
