Celine Dion's house guzzles 6.5 MILLION gallons of water
I actually like Celine. Not her songs so much, but she seems like a really nice person, so this is slightly painful to write. Turns out, Celine Dion's house in Florida seems to be immune from water conservation efforts, amidst a drought in the area. Last year, Ms. Dion used 6.5 million gallons of water at her home on Jupiter Island. That is 100 times more than the average resident uses per day, or about 18,000 gallons a day, according to the U.S Water Institute. And here's the kicker: Celine doesn't even live there yet, as it is still under construction.
Celine's home is not alone however. Experts say that at least 50 percent of Florida's water is used for landscaping. Drew Martin of the Sierra Club is quoted in an ABC article as saying people need to go back to using native plants in a technique known as xeriscaping. Jupiter Island City officials defend Dion's water use, saying it's just that her acreage is so enormous, that on a per acre basis, the home usage is only a little above average.
