I held off as long as I could but air conditioner use is in full swing at my house. This does not mean a full surrender to high electricity bills, however. There are ways to
save electricity and stay cool this summer. It just takes a few small changes.
- Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day. This keeps the sun from cooking your living room.
- Turn off your A/C when you are not home or at the very least, set it for a higher temperature.
- Use a programmable thermostat to regulate your system. This eliminates the human error aspect in case you forget to turn off the A/C when you leave the house for work.
- When going on vacation, don't forget to unplug appliances so they are not drawing power while you are gone.
- Service your air conditioners. Clean or replace the filters as clean airways mean less work for the unit.

One other way to keep cool this summer and save on your energy bills is to recycle the cold air already in your house. By using the cool air from the lower levels to displace the hot air that rises upstairs, your home can be more comfortable and use less air conditioning. http://www.powerzoning.com

Another tip, from a Southerner who lives through these summers with a 105 degree heat index for 4 months a year, is to avoid heating up the house.
Don't run the dryer.
Don't cook - eat sandwiches, salads, smoothies, etc. Grill outside. If you must cook something do it early in the day and then reheat it in a small appliance like a toaster oven.
Put your bed sheets in the freezer and put them on the bed before you go to sleep.

Sheets in the freezer? I've never thought of doing that before! I just killed my microwave so I've been running the oven more often than I usually do. Humph.
