Five ways to reuse old apples

I love apples but once they get past the crunchy point and into pithy I have little use for them. Usually I toss them into the compost bin but there are other ways to reuse them. Here are five:
  1. Though overripe apples won't be good for a pie, they are well suited for homemade applesauce.
  2. Apples can be used to make an exfoliating face mask.
  3. In elementary school we made apple faces by carving out eyes and a mouth in a peeled apple, putting it on a stick and letting it dry. We then added cotton fiber for hair and used leftover fabric scraps for clothes.
  4. Thinly slice and dry the apples in a 200 degree oven for six hours and create an apple wreath or potpourri.
  5. Cut the apples in pieces and leave them outside for birds and furry creatures.
