Tasmanian Devil is on the endangered list

This week, Australia's Tasmanian Devil was listed as an endangered species by the Tasmanian government. The Tasmanian Devil's population is dwindling quickly due to a fatal and disfiguring facial cancer that has cut the population by as much as 60 percent.

Most of us probably know Taz, the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Toons, but the real Taz is quite interesting too. Tasmanian Devils are the size of a small dog, but stocky and muscular and they are now the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world. And they really have some "devilish" qualities, giving off an offensive odor when stressed and having a very loud and disturbing speech.

The facial cancer originated from one contagious cell line and is genetically identical in every animal. Some Tasmanian Devils are showing antibodies to the cancer, which is promising.
