Offices with windows and plants make employees happy
A new study, published in the February issue of HortScience, shows that green offices actually make for happier employees. The study aimed to investigate whether employees who work in offices with windows, views of green spaces and plants in the office have greater job satisfaction than those who do not. In other words, how do office workers feel about working in artificially-lit, gray cubicles with no windows in sight, without any reference to the outside world? Not that I've ever worked anywhere like that.
The study showed that people who worked in offices with plants and windows felt better about their jobs and their work. Surprise, surprise!
What can you do if you don't have windows in your workspace? Do what you can with what you've got. Bring a houseplant to the office. And perhaps most importantly, force yourself to use your work breaks to take a few minutes to go outside, take in some sunlight and gaze at a tree if you can find one. Even a five minute stroll around the building can lift your spirits.
