This week is World Vegetarian Week
This week, from May 19th to May 23rd, is World Vegetarian Week, sponsored by PETA. Bruce Friedrich, V.P. for campaigns at PETA, gives us his "Top 10 Reasons to go Vegetarian." Here's a sample of his reasons:
- Eating meat is bad for the environment.
- Your own health, including reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease, according to experts quoted by Friedrich.
- "If you wouldn't eat a dog you shouldn't eat a chicken": According to several studies quoted by Friedrich, chickens are smarter than cats and dogs.
While there are lots of reasons to go vegetarian (or not), on the pro-side, I would add your own budget to the list of reasons. A can of beans generally costs a lot less than meat, portion for portion. And as far as the environment goes, vegetarianism doesn't have to be all or nothing. Even increasing the number of vegetarian meals you eat can make a big difference.
