The great kangaroo kill 2008

I guess Paul McCartney's diplomatic clout isn't what it used to be. Only a few months after he went on camera to condemn the Australian government's plans to cull 400 kangaroos, soldiers and vets at the Canberra military communications base went about their business of darting the overpopulated jumpers. The military argued that the 600 kangaroos on the small plot of land were harming local species and many would soon starve to death.

Animal rights protesters had raised a lot of sand about the cull, vowing to stop the killings and relocate the roos instead. This effort was backed by the former Beatle and even his ex, Heather Mills, who had pledged to put some of her divorce settlement money towards the effort. No word on whether that money was actually donated. I'm guessing: probably not.

In the end, only 2 protesters broke through the police barricade and they attempted to free the wrong kangaroos -- ones that weren't destined for the lethal injection.
