Ireland to go hunting for "ghost nets"
The Irish Sea Fisheries Board plans to go hunt down thousands of kilometers of lost, dumped and abandoned fishing nets, or "ghost nets," this summer. The ghost nets are destroying fish stocks and "Operation Deepclean" aims to gather them up. The operation is being funded by the EU for about $775,000 USD."Ghost nets" are so called because they drift in the ocean and catch and trap fish and other sea life for years afterwards. The fish are caught and and die in the nets eventually. The effect has devastated certain sea life populations, including deepwater sharks.
No one is sure how many "ghost nets" there are and part of the project will be to try to get a handle on the extent of the situation.
