Eco-friendly coffee sales booming
The Rainforest Alliance has nearly doubled the amount of coffee sold every year through its program that certifies coffee grown in a way that is good for the earth and the farmers.Big purchasers of Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee include McDonalds UK and Lavazza. McDonald's UK saw a 22 percent jump in coffee sales in its stores after switching to the Rainforest-certified coffee. Pretty cool.
Eco-labels on coffee should be carefully examined as you shop for your morning java. The Rainforest Alliance certification is a highly meaningful one, according to Consumer Reports, as is "Bird-Friendly." Watch out for shade-grown, as it may not mean all that much. I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority.
