Synthetic turf doesn't pose any health risks, according to Bloomberg report
Back in March, several groups in New York City called for a moratorium on the use of artificial turf on new sports fields in the city until a full review of the health risks could be executed. Synthetic turf fields are composed of recycled tires and even the NYC Department of Health admitted that certain materials have been found in the rubber, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metals and volatile organic compounds. Critics also say the turf creates "heat islands" that can climb as high as 170 degrees.
The NY Department of Health, via their website, still recommends washing your hands after playing on a synthetic turf field or playground, and definitely before eating or drinking. Good advice for anyone, no matter where you are located. Also, on hot days, according to the Department, users should take rest breaks and drink plenty of water.
