All the convenience of a plastic water bottle, and none of the eco-nastiness
So, we all know to tote our water in reusable bottles (riiiight?) But what if you're of the group that is afraid of chemicals from their reusable bottles leeching into their water, or you consistently find yourself in situations where a plastic, pre-filled bottle would just be more convenient? Well, Primo, a company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, says it's found the answer: water bottles that are just as convenient as the rest, but much gentler on the environment.
Why? Because it's made from "Ingeo," a plastic-like material made entirely from renewable resources like corn. (Don't worry, though - it's not genetically-modified corn).
The water itself is nothing special - its sourced from "approved springs" or "municipal water" (read: tap water). But this is not to say that tap water can't be tasty - and Primo agrees. The company claims that, in blind taste tests, 4 out of 5 people preferred to it to their home tap water.
Primo claims that if everyone traded in their traditional PET-made water bottles for these new corn-based bottles, we'd save 1 billion gallons of gas a year.

Curious though - wouldn't fossil fuels be used to form the corn into these plastic bottles?
There really isn't any excuse to not just use a reusable stainless steel or aluminum bottle anymore...

Oh, I am far from a fashionista, especially at those prices. Greenwashing at it's best! :-)

No idea why this put an old comment of mine here, but my "relevant" comment is there too. Weird system.

David -
It wouldn't be the first time we've seen comment strangeness here.
Hint to the GreenDaily folks: Consistent posting software isn't rocket science anymore. It's annoying when I respond to a comment - and that comment disappears a few hours later, making my response nonsensical. Also, it'd be nice to be able to edit comments - even if it was only a short window - to handle goofs that seem to slip through.

I have to agree with the comments here. A reusable water bottle is a more eco-friendly choice hands down.
We've used Klean Kanteens for close to a year now and are no longer adding to the landfill problem.
We bought ours online at www.plasticfreebottles.com but these days many retailers sell them anyway.

BIOTA Spring Water (http://www.biotaspringwater.com/) has been selling water in compostable corn-based bottles for at least a year now. BIOTA ("Blame It On The Altitude") is kind of hard to find, though...will Primo be widely available outside of the Research Triangle?

It's so easy and simple to just carry around a reusable water bottle. If people are so worried about bacteria build up then buy a water bottle with a filter. Fit & Fresh LivPURE is less than 10 bucks and it filters water as your drinking...BPA and worry free!

While refillable would obviously be better, most people will still buy ready-packaged...its a societal issue.
With oil futures topping $131 per barrel, and traditional plastic being thrown away daily (water, colas, juices, etc.) this leads me to wonder why congress doesn't introduce a bill to require manufacturers to use corn bottles? Better for the environment, less oil consumption and no chemical leeching (gross). Seems like an easy fix.
