Toronto Blue Jays go green
The Blue Jays play at the Rogers Centre in Toronto (a venue you may know by its former name, the SkyDome). This enormous entertainment center has played host to over 2,000 events and 50 million people since it first opened in 1989, and the tireless efforts of staff to make the facility more eco-friendly continue to make it an industry leader. Here's a few green initiatives the organizations has underway:
- They have installed new, more energy efficient lighting fixtures in the concourse, offices and washrooms, allowing facility managers to time schedule the lighting in these parts of the building. In addition, day light is harvested to dim lighting levels in the offices and hallways -- and, as the light levels outside increase, indoor light levels are automatically decreased.
- The center and its tenants recycle cardboard, bottles, cans, metal and organic waste.
- Facility staff are working with Turtle Island Recycling to recycle fluorescent light bulbs and batteries.
- Aramark, the company in charge of food services at the Rogers Centre, is also working with the organization to modify their packaging in order to reduce waste going into landfills.
In addition, the company has a number of projects it's working on for the future, such as:
- Looking at installing solar panels on the building.
- Exploring the purchase of carbon offsets.
- Meeting with companies like Enbridge to help out with load shedding during peak times of electricity demand.
- Working with Enwave to cool the building using deep lake water cooling.

Glad you spelt it "centre". I wonder how much energy it takes for it to open its roof.
