YKK: an earth-friendly zipper
If you're wearing any article of clothing that includes a zipper, chances are that it has the letters YKK stamped into it. You've seen the initials all of your life, but you probably didn't take much notice. The Tokyo-based company is by far the largest manufacturer of the classically under-appreciated fastener that we call the zipper. And fortunately, YKK's company philosophy is based around "the cycle of goodness" -- a belief that good things come to those who do good. That's partly why they've taken it upon themselves to make the world's billions of zippers more eco-friendly. By offering a zipper made from recycled PET plastic called the Natulon, and a biodegradable zipper called the ReEarth, YKK claims to be the first zipper company to go green. Zippers may not be a the greatest threat to the planet, but as YKK says on its website: "Little Parts. Big Difference." Every little bit adds up. Hopefully, eco-friendly clothing designers will catch on and help spark demand for eco-zippers.
