Taco Bell takes a step towards sustainability
With the surprising advent of larger, discount retail stores like Walmart and Target "going green" lately, it should be no surprise that fast food franchises are jumping on the bandwagon as well. McDonald's has been proactive about leading the green charge, but now we get wind that Taco Bell is taking positive steps in the sustainable direction.More than 3,000 Taco Bell restaurants have already installed a "Grill-to-Order" system that reduces water and energy use, saving each store an estimated $5,900. The remaining 2,600 restaurants plan to install the system by 2010. System-wide, these changes will not only help save the planet, but will also save the company more than $17 million a year. For this reason, we all realize that the money-saving measures are a business and image decision, but I hope it's just the start of more intensive sustainable direction for Taco Bell.
