Here comes the Recession Diet

Due to the slumping economy, Americans are finding lots of ways to cut expenses, according to a recent NY Times article. With the price of necessities like gas and milk going through the roof, people are getting creative on other expenses. Here are some examples of the cost-cutting going on during this "recession diet," according to the article:

  • Eating in instead of dining out
  • Switching from brand names for loads of things
  • Most pasta, less red meat
  • Less spending on clothes, furniture
Burt Flickinger, a retail consultant, said the last time he saw such big changes to buying patterns was the late 1970s, when inflation prompted Americans to "switch from red meat to pork to poultry to pasta -- then to peanut butter and jelly."

Although times of economic strife are always rough, some of these changes could be seen as better for the environment. A very small comfort perhaps, but still something to think about.
