Bush administration bumps up mileage goals
Take a picture, it'll last longer. It's not often that you'll see environmentalists applauding any rules put in place by the Bush administration, but many tree-hugging types were pleasantly surprised today when it acted to raise the fuel-efficiency standards to 31.6mpg by 2015. As of now, the mandated average sits at 25mpg -- where it's been since 1986.The administration's new goal will be the first gut check for automakers before the CAFE standards take effect in 2020, raising the standard for automaker fuel-efficiency to 35mpg. Instead of fighting the decision, most automakers publicly embraced the unexpected changes -- while some of them were obviously surprise. According to one industry insider, "We expected this from the next president, not from the current president."
