Brad Pitt-backed initiative produces first house
One down, four homes, one 18-unit apartment complex, and one community center to go. Global Green USA's Holy Cross project successfully built its first green single-family home (shown in detail in the video above).
The new homes are expected to save their residents anywhere from $1200 to $2400 in yearly energy bills due to rainwater harvesting and solar and geothermal energy. The home was built to encourage cross breezes and sunlight to help naturally cool and heat the house, and made with sustainable materials and non-toxic paints.
Unfortunately, the house will be used only as a visitor's center for the next year or so until the other buildings go up. The house will officially open on May 15.
