Melting mountains are a "timebomb"
There is a "time bomb" in the works, according to scientist Wouter Buyaert, at a meeting of geoscientists this week. Snow and glaciers all over the world are melting earlier in the year than usual, meaning that the water will already be gone during the summer when people really need it. The areas most at risk are parts of the Middle East, southern Africa, South America, the Mediterranean and the United States.Daniel Viviroli believes that 40 percent of mountainous regions are at risk of early melt, and the earth's sub-tropics, which are home to 70 percent of the world's population, are most at risk. In some Himalayan valleys, for example, the snow has completely disappeared during the months when it usually covers the mountains. According to the scientists, rising global temperatures are causing the melting to happen earlier and faster.
