We have reused gently worn socks (lower cut sport style) by filling them with beans and then sewing them shut. My boys use them to play hackysack, or to toss around as bean bags on the yard sized tick-tack-toe game.

I have used old socks for years for storing christmas ornaments. It works very well. I also store seasonal cups and glasses in them.

This is great! So easy to do and it will make such a difference.

I am glad you are also pointing out that it is much more relevant to buy organic cotton socks (rather than the regular cotton that pollutes so much via fertilizers and pesticides). Your comment about avoiding Merino wool from Australia (where the Merino sheep are treated rather nastily) also helps the American consumer to make good decisions.

I think as a society we have lost it if we continue pointing out the irrelevant (considering the big picture) while not exchanging thoughts that may be less comfortable to hear but need to be said.

Articles about reusing socks are embarrassing since they make no difference but lead to people thinking that doing it will make a difference.

Don't worry about your socks! Sweat the big stuff. And once you have reduced your impact by 50% (or so) worry about reusing socks, shoelaces, CD jewel cases, and other minor things.
