5 Ways to Reuse: CD jewel cases
My generation, at least in part, is defined by CDs. Today's teens can opt for mp3s, but my friends and I collected CDs by the dozens, buying and swapping and letting them pile up on our boomboxes.Years later, my CDs sit in dusty piles in my closet, taking up space. But I'm loathe to toss them, mostly because of their plastic cases.
If you're suffering from jewel case overload and the library has threatened to stop accepting your 90s soft rock CD donations, here are some uses for the jewel cases (but please, take the discs out first).
Check out the tips after the jump.
- Make a jewel case bookend (I made several - they really work!)
- Store some in your car and store wayward business cards and phone numbers for safe keeping
- Open 'em up and use them to hold recipe cards as you cook
- Create DIY jewel case wall art! (Here's an instructional video).
- Print out a calendar and slip it into one side of the case. Voila! Handy desk accessory.

Another attempt fight symptoms of consumerism rather than consumerism.
Get used to it! Recycling or reusing stuff you do not need is what you are going to do if you buy stuff you do not really need.

Karsten,
While I agree with your assessment of consumerism in general...you do suggest that you didn't listen to music before mp3s. I know I needed music before mp3s were invented.

Just because I DID it does not mean I still do it or that it was NECESSARY to do it. It also does not mean that I have jewel cases sitting around in numbers that I need to be concerned about how to reuse them. As a matter of fact, I have picked jewel cases out of the recycling (someone else's) to be filled with CDs.
Tell people who have nothing, work for pennies a day, who die around age 40, who pick food out of the dump to live, etc. what you NEED.
CD jewel cases are not a problem and writing articles about how to reuse jewel cases is a waste of time. Give me a break. Worry about life-style choices and impacts that matter. Worry about CD jewel case reuse when the industrialized nations use 70% less energy than now.

I was actually just looking for something to do with my old jewel cases. I was doing a bit of spring cleaning this weekend and I found an old box of jewel cases of CDs I no longer own.
While I think Karsten makes a valid point, everyone needs to start somewhere and the little things do matter! I have made a lot of little changes and personally have reduced my energy consumption by 50% over the last 4 months. Because they were little changes they were easy for me to adopt, and while they weren't "life changing", they do have a dramatic impact. Kudos to Ellen for trying make the changes, one small change at a time.
