The case against Trevor Baldwin -- who was ticketed back in October for driving an unsafe vehicle -- was thrown out by a Toronto judge last Thursday. The vehicle in question was a stripped down 80's-era Buick, devoid of an engine or transmission. Instead, the vehicle is propelled by 4 sets of bike pedals and had been designed by artist Michel de Broin to make a statement about the inefficiency of the combustion engine. The vehicle has been clocked at hair-raising speeds of 15 km/h.
Due to it's lightning speed and massive carbon emissions, the Shared Propulsion Vehicle was immediately deemed 'unsafe' by officers on the scene. They promptly impounded the vehicle, ticketing Baldwin for 'operating and unsafe vehicle,' and towing away the Buick.
However, it was Trevor -- and bike proponents everywhere -- that got the last laugh, and I mean that literally. Not only was the case thrown out of the Toronto courtroom, but according to the local paper: "As the Crown prosecutor tried to make his case Thursday, the court erupted in laughter, and the charges were thrown out." Awesome.
On his way out of the courtroom, Baldwin was asked what he would do next, to which he replied: "I'm thinking its a really nice day, so we might go for a drive." If this happened in my town, I don't know if the verdict would have been so light. Kudos to the Canadian justice system for having a sense of humor.
